Design Guides

The Technical Committee has reacted to ongoing suggestions from industry that a set of Design Guides for concrete bridges would be hugely beneficial to bridge designers, aiding them to use concrete freely and positively.

A structural framework for the production of web-based design guides has now been produced and incorporates three separate modules: Design, Construction and Maintenance. Specific sub-sections have been identified in all three and are currently being developed to provide members and users with meaningful information. This will include an introduction and a list of existing high-quality references in each case providing a fast route to the best possible advice.

The sub-sections under review currently are:

Design Module Construction Module Maintenence Module
Preliminary Design Forms of Contract Deterioration Mechanisms
Substructures Material Specifications Testing
Bridge Analysis Formwork Design Treatment
RC Design Falsework Design Performance Design
Prestressed Concrete Design Hot Weather Concreting
Detailing Cold Weather Contreting
Ancillary Items Curing
International Design Surfacing
Materials / Durability Contruction Joints
Compaction

The Technical Commitee have concentrated on the Design Module in phase 1 of this project. A comprehensive review programme is currently under way prior to publication on the CBDG website for members only.

Members are invited to comment on, and contribute to, appropriate areas.
